Gytheio (also spelled Gythio) is a relaxed seaside town in Laconia on the eastern edge of the Mani Peninsula. Once the main port of ancient Sparta, today it’s known for its colourful harbourfront, easy beaches, and a laid-back, local feel. It’s also tied to legend: nearby Cranae Island is where Helen of Troy and Paris are said to have spent their first night—sparking the Trojan War.
