About Heraklion

Heraklion isn't a beach resort but a real city — and that's what makes it interesting. The Venetian harbour with its Koules fortress, the market along 1866 Street, and the Archaeological Museum with the treasures of Knossos easily fill a few days. Knossos itself, the largest Minoan palace with its throne room and frescoes, is a short drive from the centre.

Many travellers use Heraklion as a base: beaches like Amoudara are close by, and the rest of Crete is within easy reach. Spring and autumn are the most pleasant for the city and the sites; summer is hot but lively.
